When this @hm campaign came out I was 19. I stayed up all night and read the comments section. I watched strangers dissect and rip apart my young body. I hadn’t previously realized how wildly out of place my body was as a model. I didn’t want to be a bold representation, I just wanted to model. However, me being cast as someone above the standard straight size is an act of resistance to the state of fashion. Even though I face the same trolls now and hear the same occasional off-color comments on set—the community I have found in the standard fashion fighters has been immensely powerful and important. Some days I cannot wait for the day that seeing my body in front of a camera is no longer “refreshing” nor “noteworthy”. Until then, I’ll strap on my nude seamless underwear and show up to fight the same fight as all beautiful girls who have felt out of place.
