@silja_torres

Sometimes you just need to watch your child have a conversation with a slug to forget your worries and remember to find joy, even when it’s slimy.Never a dull moment with @phil_torres and his eye for spotting nature EVERYWHERE 😂 Also very fitting with Fjora’s middle name being Birdie to find a 🐣 nest outside of her pediatrician’s window 🥰Four weeks postpartum, and the creative spark is returning—especially in the kitchen. Lately, I’ve been weaving fennel into everything from breads to cakes to muffins. Atlis, my three-year-old, is obsessed with the flavor, and its subtle sweetness brings warmth and depth when baking—especially in these cornbread muffins.

Fennel and fenugreek aren’t just tasty—they’re deeply nourishing allies for postpartum bodies like mine, especially when it comes to supporting milk supply. Meals and snacks that are grounding, healing, and comforting are exactly what my body needs right now, and these muffins are wholesome perfection in a bite.

Love using my @mockmillusa for the freshest of flours, and thanks to @californiaoliveranch for the olive oil inspiration for this recipe. I’m using their mild organic which is perfect for baking.

Cornbread muffins with fennel + fenugreek Recipe:
Makes 12 muffins

Ingredients
	•	1 cup yellow cornmeal
	•	1 cup all-purpose flour (or sub ½ cup oat flour for lactation boost)
	•	1 tbsp baking powder
	•	1/2 tsp baking soda
	•	1/2 tsp salt
	•	1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
	•	2 large eggs
	•	1/2 cup whole milk Greek yogurt
	•	1 cup buttermilk
	•	1/3 cup olive oil
	•	1–1.5 tsp ground fenugreek (start with 1 tsp for a gentle flavor)
 - 1bsp fennel seeds (cracked a bit with mortar and pestle)
	•	Optional add-ins:
1 tsp vanilla extract
	•	2 tbsp ground flaxseed or brewer’s yeast (for lactation)
	•	1/2 cup chopped dates or for natural sweetness

Instructions
	1.	Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line or grease a muffin tin.
	2.	In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, fenugreek, and flaxseed (if using).
	3.	In another bowl, whisk the eggs, Greek yogurt, milk, olive oil, and maple syrup until smooth.
	4.	Gently stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Fold in any optional add-ins.
	5.	Divide into muffin cups and bake for 15–18 minutes, or until golden and set.
	6.	Let cool for 5 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm and top with a little ghee or honey butter ❤️Momma on duty and on the go ❤️🤌🏼🙏🏼When packing for 2 extremely different climates I love finding a brand that is a one stop shop! Waterproof for our kind of adventures is essential and @janandjul made packing for this trip easy!At 7200ft elevation, Los Quetzales Cabins make you feel like you’re living real life Swiss Family Robinson but up in the clouds, which is why after a long day of jungle trekking we watched it during a rain storm! The hike had over a dozen river crossings, big elevation gains and drops, and was one of those challenges we did as a family that makes you feel stronger together. And somehow, Fjora cozily napped during some of the most intense parts.
More to come!So my sourdough dinner rolls have… evolved 😂 (I’m married to an entomologist so I think I’m allowed to make that joke!)
Hard to tell from the look of them but not only did the @nordicwareusa bug mold somehow work perfectly but my dinner roll recipe I’ve worked on over the years really came through. This was my first dough I mixed with my new @oonihq Halo Pro and I am so obsessed such a level up for home baking!

Thanks to @stevieyaaaay for gifting us the best @nordicwareusa bug pan ❤️❤️🙏🏼I used to leave pediatrician appointments feeling a little guilty…
“Routine is everything. Sleep schedules are vital.”

And I agree— they are super important, but they aren’t always realistic.
Because what if your life isn’t routine or always perfectly structured? We didn’t want to set up our kids for a false sense of comfort and expectation.

For our family, our days are always shifting—time zones, hotels, new beds, long travel days… work that is always on the road. While we may be a more extreme example of lack of routine, even when we’re home we try to keep our days dynamic and we found it keeps our lives happier as a family and as a couple.

From the beginning, we knew our life would look like this, and we wanted to build in some resilience and adaptability early.
So instead of trying to control the environment (blackout tents/curtains, only napping at home, etc), we focused on something we could carry with us anywhere.

From birth, we started noticing cues—and naming them. Something that seems obvious but is also really useful.
“Oh, you’re tired.”
“You must feel tired, let me help you.”

Over and over.

And then I would support them however I could without creating the association that support = you will now go to a perfectly dark room for a nap.
We started this at home, persevering to get our kids to love long car naps and using certain songs that did the trick every time, stroller naps, essentially several times a week adapting napping on the go rather than pausing our lives for every nap. Did it work smoothly every time? No. Did it build resilience? Absolutely.

For those who don’t know— our 4 year old has been on hundreds of flights and 23 countries, and our 1 year old has been on dozens of flights and 9 countries. This is usually for our work and choosing to stick together despite the challenges, and napping and jet lag adapting is something we’ll have built a life around.
